T R A N S P O R T A T I O N Roads The major routes run through Valley Stream are Southern State Parkway from Brooklyn and Queens (called the Belt Parkway in those two boroughs) to Oakdale, Sunrise Highway (Route 27) and Merrick Road - Montauk Highway (Route 27A). Valley Stream is close to the following routes: The Long Island Expressway (interstate Route 495) runs from Manhattan to Riverhead, Northern State Parkway from Queens to Hauppauge, Northern Boulevard (Route 25A), Jericho Turnpike (Route 25) and Cross Island Parkway. Trains The Long Island Rail Road holds the distinction of being the busiest railroad in North America. Chartered on April 24, 1834, the LIRR carries an average of 290,000 passengers each weekday on 735 daily trains. The LIRR system is comprised of nine branches, stretching from the eastern tip of Montauk, Long Island to the refurbished Penn Station in the heart of Manhattan, approximately 120 miles away.
